American History X
Karakter: 4+
Skinheads with an aggressive behavior that wears black skin clothes and tattoos... Supporters of the white raze with hate to the Jews. They are not fools; they are dangerous, self-thinking individuals, affected of peer pressure. They are Nazis.
American History X gives you a view of this people's life.
Derek Vinyard is the main character.
At the starting point he wasn't the type you connect to a Nazi.He was a normal teenager who ate dinner with his family and hung out with friends.
Derek's relationship to his black headmaster dr.
Bob Sweeney was of the good sort. They talked about much.
His father, Dennis Vinyard got to know about this, and called dr. Sweeney's word "nigger bullshit". From hispoint of view black people were treated good because they were black, and they used this to move forward the society.Derek got influenced of his father's opinion, and maybe changed a bit.
When some black people shot Dennis while he was doing his job as a fireman, Derek totally changed. He started a new way of living, and
Cameron Alexander was the adult that dragged Derek into the Nazi's lines.
Derek's younger brother, Danny saw what Derek did and listened to what he said. He got effected of his older brother's behavior, and he ended up in the Nazi's gang.
American History X is a film about the Nazism in The States. It's partly made to show people how it is to be a Nazi. You learn how easy it is to start hang around with groups of Nazis, but how hard it is to get out.
Though there's much evil, the film gives a hope:
Derek got in prison for killing. When he walked out he had changed himself. He tried to save his family from being split up, and he tried to turn Danny away from Cameron Alexander and the Nazis.
The film is made more exiting with some techniques:
When it's used black and white there's something that already has happened.
Slow motion is used in important sequences, that you have to see to understand some of the main points in the film.
the use of water symbolizes clearance, and is a way to tell that something is changing from bad to good.
E.g. in the end of the film Derek have a shower when he is in the changing period. He "cleaned" away the Nazism.
I find this film good because the story is very good and realistic. Some of the scenes are extremely strong but good, I think. Many scenes make strong contrasts.
E.g. Derek and his girlfriend Stacey are having a good time in their bed, when Danny stops them to warn Derek that his car is being hotwired by some black people. In the next scene Derek is outside the house, shooting at the thieves. The next moment he tells the thief that didn't manage to run away, to put his teeth on the curb. Then he crushes the head with his foot.
It scares me that these things actually happen for real. The Nazism contains much of violence, brutality and hate. Nazis are dangerous because they keep together.
Still there's hope in all the misery,
at least that is what American History X tries to tell.
